Austin State Hospital – Austin, Texas

The Main Administration Building at Austin State Hospital constructed in 1859 is the third oldest public building in Texas. Vernon L. Dunagin, AIA, designed the east wing restoration in 1990 when the roof was replaced with standing seam lead-coated copper. This material was selected to match the gray color of the original “tin” roof and was approved by the Texas Historic Commission. Masonry repair were also enacted to limit water infiltration into the walls which was having a significant deteriorating effect on the building and its continuing use for Texas Department of MHMR administrative offices.
