Institute of Texan Cultures – San Antonio, Texas

The Institute of Texan Cultures was opened for Hemisfair in 1968. The original roof remained on the building until its replacement design was produced by Vernon L. Dunagin, AIA, in 1995. Challenges in the project included significant ponding water and access to the building which was made extraordinarily difficult by the back sloping walls. The existing panels for the penthouse remained with repairs to reduce cost. A feature designed into the replacement was an elaborate perimeter hook system to allow installation of large banners advertising events.
